Analytical Methods

FedEx, Northrop Grumman C-MANPADS

When Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation wanted to develop a system to protect commercial airliners against man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS) for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Stark/AMI was approached to conduct the aerodynamic design and analysis.

Stark/AMI engineers took a set of difficult constraints and designed a pod that met all the criteria and satisfied all FAA regulations while having a minimal impact on fuel economy.  CFD solutions which showed the pod to be absent strong shocks and vibrations were critical to the design process.  The pod was adapted with collars to fit a wide range of commercial aircraft, and further distributed designs without the pods were fitted to Head of State aircraft.
