Analytical Methods

Flight in Icing

Stark/AMI has methods to compute ice accretion on aircraft modifications such as radomes, antennas, cameras, etc., in accordance with 14 CFR 25 Appendix C. Stark/AMI uses the NASA code LEWICE in conjunction with the Stark/AMI codes VSAERO and ICE to compute ice collection efficiency, ice shape and mass.

The effect of ice build-up on aircraft drag and handling can be estimated using CFD or empirical methods. Likewise, the potential for shed-ice to impact downstream components or to be ingested by an engine can be assessed using the trajectory analysis method in the Stark/AMI code ICE.
