Aircraft Modification Analyses

For aircraft modification analyses, the effect of the modification on the performance and structure of the aircraft must be assessed for FAA certification. Information about the aircraft’s performance characteristics is often limited and must be reverse engineered from available information such as the Aircraft Flight Manual, Pilot’s Operating Handbook and the Type Certificate Data Sheet. Stark/AMI can use this information to determine takeoff and landing performance, cruise performance and fuel burn, range and endurance, etc. If these sources are not available but the aircraft geometry is well-defined, performance models can be developed from the geometry definitions alone using Stark/AMI’s in-house Subsonic Aircraft Performance Program, PERF. Using empirical methods and hundreds of input parameters, this code can develop a highly accurate model to perform climb, cruise and descent calculations as well as various mission analyses.

When precise aircraft geometry is required, Stark/AMI can assist in the laser scanning of an aircraft to gather high-definition geometry data. Stark/AMI employees can oversee the scanning process to ensure the scanning environment remains adequately controlled at all times, the aircraft reference system is established properly, and the regions of interest are well-defined, both in relative location and point-cloud quality. With the completed laser scan data, Stark/AMI can post-process the scan data using CATIA and in-house smoothing algorithms to generate high-fidelity surface lofts that are ready for CFD analysis.
